Friday, March 31, 2023, is World Backup Day, the annual observance set aside to help ensure that businesses and individual users alike are doing what they need to do to protect their data from loss. Let’s go over where this observance came from, why it is so important for your business, and how you can make sure your organization is as protected as possible.
According to the official World Backup Day website, “March 31st is the day to back up and better protect your data.” With various resources and statistics shared on the website, it is the public-facing aspect of an independently run initiative that started—of all places—on Reddit, back in 2011.
In the decade-plus since the post first went up, World Backup Day has become a global observance, strategically timed to, as a commenter on the Reddit post put it, “avoid really bad April Fool’s pranks.”
Since then, World Backup Day has been observed on March 31st each year.
While World Backup Day is intended for everyone’s benefit, focused on personal data and treasured memories, today’s businesses need to take the holiday extra seriously.
So seriously, in fact, that it should be observed each and every day.
And, on the flip side, why wait until March 31st to start?
At Aniar IT Services, we contend that a business’ data needs to be backed up more stringently than what World Backup Day recommends—after all, if an individual’s files are lost, they might individually face some frustration and no longer have some treasured memories. While we don’t want to minimize these losses in any way, a data loss event within a business can have much wider-reaching repercussions. If a business’ data loss event is severe enough, numerous livelihoods are very much on the line…and depending on the business’ industry, lives could potentially be at stake.
Hence why we take such a hard stance on the necessity of business backups, particularly as a part of a larger business continuity strategy. Disasters of all shapes and sizes happen in business all the time. While we don’t want to sound overly pessimistic, just imagine if you were waiting for World Backup Day to attend to your backup needs, and your file server died on the 30th.
You can trust our experts to assist you in setting up a comprehensive backup and disaster recovery strategy that will allow your business to bounce back from all but the worst possible circumstances. Find out more (or just get started) by giving us a call at 094 90 48200 .
